The Freaks 4U Guide to Europe's Top Gaming Events

With the rise of gaming as a mainstream form of entertainment, more and more events populate the calendar each year. Esports tournaments sell out the world’s biggest arenas, public trade shows attract hundreds of thousands of attendees and business-to-business events allow brands to connect with the biggest names in the industry.

These events present unique opportunities for companies within the videogames market, whether endemic brands looking to strengthen their positions or non-endemic brands looking to enter the market for the first time.

Here, we present a brief guide to some of the European events to consider when formulating your overall strategies in the gaming space, and what we at Freaks 4U Gaming can do to help maximise your marketing strategies.

Trade Fairs

The self-proclaimed ‘Heart of Gaming’, gamescom is the leading trade fair in Europe and second largest gaming event in the world by exhibition space. Organised by the Federal Association of Interactive Entertainment Software, 345,000 people from both the public and industry descend upon the Koelnmesse from both the public and industry.

In short, it is massive. Everything happens, from major developers showing off their new games, hardware manufacturers unveiling new products and the gamescom congress bringing together industry professionals for roundtables, workshops and networking.

Paris Games Week

Another event with huge attendances, Paris Games Week sees French-speaking fans celebrate all things videogame-related. The 2016 edition alone brought over 300,000 fans to the Porte de Versailles over five days.

A key event in targeting one of the largest markets in Europe, Paris Games Week hosts developers and hardware manufacturers’ showcases, workshops and thrilling esports competitions!

The largest gaming event in Eastern Europe is now into its twelfth year. Events at IgroMir include some of the world’s biggest developers and publishers exhibiting their games, esports tournaments and industry panels.

Incorporating both public and industry shows, it also has the unique characteristic of partnering with ComicCon Russia. This creates a huge event covering over 50,000 sq.m. of space with a wide, crossover audience.

Intel Extreme Masters: Katowice

Held in the iconic UFO-shaped Spodek arena, IEM Katowice brings the world’s top talent to one of the grandest, most prestigious esports events on the gaming calendar.

As the culmination of a series of events covering CS:GO, League of Legends, StarCraft II, Heroes of the Storm and Crossfire, this year saw the addition of a second weekend of action to accommodate its massive growth.

DreamHack Summer/Winter

One of the oldest LAN parties, DreamHack is the world’s largest digital festival. Watch in awe as over 10,000 dedicated gamers descend upon the Swedish town of Jönköping with their full gaming setups, adding to the 50,000-plus total visitors. With top-level esports, cosplay and exhibitions all on the cards, DreamHack offers an atmosphere like no other event on the European gaming calendar.

Like the Intel Extreme Masters, ESL One is not just one event, but several major events throughout the year. Selling out some of the world’s major arenas, such as Madison Square Garden and the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, ESL One represents the highest tier of one-off esports competition.

These events all carry massive followings both online and on-site, meaning a large audience and great deal of exposure for on-board brands or products.

Reboot Develop

The luxurious Sheraton Riviera conference resort in picturesque Dubrovnik plays host to one of the largest industry-centric events in the world, featuring a host of guest speakers and developer exhibitions.

Bringing together the world’s foremost games industry insiders, Reboot Develop offers exceptional networking opportunities for marketing specialists, PR managers, developers and artists, and provides a unique, relaxed gathering spot for business deals to be brokered.

White Nights

White Nights provides a platform for industry deal-makers to connect, with a one-of-a-kind hook – business hours are strictly 2-9pm, allowing for a less intense experience.

Held three times per year in Moscow, Prague and St. Petersburg, the event sees some of gaming’s key figures hold seminars, unveilings and workshops. Every year more than 4,000 visitors all together attend the conference.
